SPSS exercise 5.2

Having pets as a kid can influence a number of things, like having pets yourself when grown up, but also on how caring you are, how happy you are and how emphatic you are as a child. In the (fictive) dataset Pets.sav you can see the result of a survey of 517 children that examined whether the type of favourite pet (dog, rabbit, lama, cat) has an effect on the empathy of children. Empathy is measured with a validated scale varying from 1 ('not empathetic at all') to 10 ('very empathetic'). Test the hypothesis that type of favourite pet has an effect on the amount of empathy of children.

a. What is the null and alternative hypothesis?

b. Run the ANOVA (including a post-hoc test) to test your hypothesis. Is the test significant?

c. Draw a conclusion based on the means in the sample.

d. How many null hypotheses do you have to formulate for the post hoc test? Which ones?

e. What do you conclude from the post hoc test?
